Tiago Pereira joins Pichardo in the triple jump final at the Europeans

The Portuguese Tiago Pereira joined Pedro Pichardo on Thursday in the triple jump final of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, in Istanbul, Turkey, with 16.39 meters, in the third attempt.

Tiago Pereira achieved his best mark in the third and last attempt, achieving the fifth best record among those classified, still below his best record of 2022 (16.48) and his personal best (16.65).

Olympic champion and European indoor title holder, Pichardo needed only one attempt to secure his place in the final, with a jump of 17.48, which is a new national indoor record.

Pichardo, 29, improved the national ‘indoor’ record by two centimeters, which was 17.46 meters and had earned him the gold medal in Torun 2021, repeating, at the time, the feats of Nelson Évora, champion in Prague 2015 and Belgrade 2017 — is, together with the 1,500 meters, with Rui Silva’s ‘tri’, the specialty with the most Portuguese titles.

The triple jump final of the 37th edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships is scheduled for Friday, starting at 8:35 p.m. local time (5:35 p.m. in Lisbon).
