The Portuguese Pedro Pablo Pichardo, in triple jump, and Auriol Dongmo, in shot put, seek this Friday to renew their titles of European champions on the indoor track, in Istanbul, where Patrícia Mamona begins to defend her scepter.
Pichardo appears in the final scheduled for 8:35 p.m. local time (5:35 p.m. in Lisbon) with the security of the new ‘indoor’ national record that he set on Thursday, when he jumped 17.48 meters in the first attempt.
The Olympic, world and European champion in the open air surpassed by two centimeters the mark that already belonged to him a year ago and by 81 the second in the classification, the German Max Heb (16.67), presenting himself as the strongest candidate for his succession, in a final that will also be played by Tiago Luís Pereira, author of the fifth best jump on Thursday (4:39 p.m.).
Starting at 7:25 p.m. (4:25 p.m.), Auriol Dongmo, world and European indoor champion, will try to overcome the Dutch Jessica Schilder, who has been stronger than the national record holder in 2023, to defend the title won in Torun 2021.
Dongmo secured one of the eight places in the final, throwing the apparatus 18.51 meters, while Schilder managed 19.18, but the result has six throws left, which will also be attempted by Jessica Inchude, seventh in the standings, with 17.92 .
Mariana Machado is the fifth finalist of the second round of the 37th Indoor European Championship and will be one of the 15 to line up in the 15 laps of the Ataköy Arena track, in Istanbul, in search of her personal record, which is currently 08.59, 39, after being the last to be caught in the playoffs.
Patrícia Mamona, the other Portuguese holder of the European indoor title, comes out to defend the scepter in the qualification, at 11:10 (08:10), with a view to the final scheduled for Saturday, also presenting herself with the best record of the year between those present.
During the morning, Marta Pen and Arialis Gandulla seek to confirm their good form and overcome the heats, in a day in which João Coelho, in the 400 meters, Salomé Afonso, in the 1,500 meters, and the sprinters Lorene Bazolo and Rosalina Saints, in the 60.
