Mariana Machado withdraws in the final of the 3000 meters of the European Athletics Championships

Mariana Machado withdrew this Friday in the final of the 3000 meters of the European Indoor Athletics Championships, in Istanbul, Turkey, which was won by the German Hanna Klein.

The 22-year-old Sporting de Braga athlete did not finish the final, in which Klein won with a time of 8.35.87, succeeding the British Amy-Eloise Markovc.

Mariana Machado, daughter of Albertina Machado, seventh in the 10,000 meters in Seoul 1988 and in the 1987 World Cup in Rome, had been the third and last catch of the qualifiers, this Thursday, with time 15.

The national record of the 3,000 meters was established in 08:36.79 minutes, on February 17, 2002, by Carla Sacramento, a distance in which Portugal has already won three gold medals, two by Fernanda Ribeiro, in Paris 1994 and Stockholm 1996, and another by Sara Moreira, in Gothenburg 2013.
