The Portuguese Evelise Veiga finished this Sunday in eighth place in the long jump competition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, with 6.36 meters, in Istanbul, Turkey.
The 27-year-old Sporting athlete reached 5.24 meters in the first valid jump, but did not complete, after having started the contest with a zero. He continued, then with 6.36, 6.11 and 6.07 until finishing with 6.19.
Evelise Veiga had reached the final with 6.53, corresponding to her best mark of the year, five centimeters from the ‘indoor’ personal record (6.58).
With the current champion, the Ukrainian Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk, absent due to injury, the British Jazmin Sawyers achieved, with 7.00 meters, the best world mark of the year, followed by the Italian Larissa Iapichino, with 6.97, a new record. transalpine, with the Serbian Ivana Vuleta, three times European champion and current indoor world champion, to be third, with 6.91.
The national long jump record is 7.00 and was achieved in 2008 by Naide Gomes, who also holds the two best Portuguese performances in European ‘indoor’ events, with victories in Madrid 2005 and Birmingham 2007.
The participation of the largest Portuguese delegation in history in the ‘indoor’ Europeans came to an end with the triple final dispute, in which it was the ninth in the ranking in Istanbul 2023 among the top eight places, including three medals, two gold and one bronze.
