UEFA will reimburse Liverpool fans who attended the last Champions League final in Paris, marked by several pre-game incidents at the Stade de France, the organization announced Tuesday.
“We recognize the negative experience these fans had, so we will compensate all those affected and who had difficulties accessing the stadium,” the UEFA statement read.
The organization will refund a total of 19,618 tickets, all of them for Liverpool fans, who were defeated 1-0 in that final by Real Madrid.
This attitude by UEFA comes days after the publication of an independent report on the incidents at the Stade de France, in which it points to the body that governs European football as the main person responsible for the chaos that occurred before the game and in the areas of access to the headquarters, on May 28 of last year.
Some Liverpool fans with tickets were not able to enter the stadium, while others were only admitted when the game was already underway, and were victims of theft and robbery. Chaos ensued outside the Stade de France, with French police using tear gas.
Initially, Liverpool fans were accused of being responsible for the situation, as many arrived late and did not have tickets, a situation that the report ended up denying.
UEFA has advanced that Real Madrid fans or other spectators who were present at the Stade de France can also request the return of their tickets, but only if they have been affected in some way by the confusion generated at the stadium entrance.
