Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz (INEOS), Olympic long-distance champion, won the 12th stage of the Vuelta a España this Thursday alone, in which Belgian Remco Evenepoel (QuickStep-Alpha Vinyl) took the lead in the individual general classification.
Carapaz, 29, completed the 192.7 kilometers between Salobreña and the climb to Peñas Blancas, in Estepona, in 4:38.26 hours, nine seconds faster than Dutchman Wilco Kelderman (BORA-hansgrohe), second, and 24 over the Spaniard Marc Soler (UAE) Emirates), third, who all integrated the break of the day.
All in all, Evenepoel maintained a 2.41 minute lead over Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), second, and 3.03 over Spaniard Enric Mas (Movistar), third, while João Almeida (UAE Emirates) dropped to the eighth, 7.18 minutes from the leader.
On Friday, the peloton awaits 168.4 kilometers between Ronda and Montilla, on a day without categorized mountains.
