The PSP’s Lisbon Metropolitan Command carried out a security operation following the football match between Benfica and Club Brugge from 6 to 9 March. The operation includes policing the stadium, escorting and monitoring supporters.
According to the statement of the PSP sent to the editors, this Tuesday it was necessary to restore public order in the Cais do Sodré area. “There were quarrels involving supporters of the Belgian club, through the throwing of glass bottles and chairs, behavior that endangered people’s physical integrity.”
The PSP had to intervene with force and the firing of 3 low-lethal ammunition, due to the behavior also targeting the police.
Two men of Belgian nationality were detained “for violations of the physical integrity of police officers who were part of the police apparatus and even an injured police officer”.
During the night, equipment used to disguise identity, for protection in case of physical confrontation, and pyrotechnic material was also seized.
Near the stadium, a Belgian supporter was arrested for assaulting an authority figure and setting off pyrotechnics, for having a higher alcohol content than allowed and for selling tickets.
The PSP calls on “all those involved in sporting events, namely fans and groups of fans, to contribute to the fair game sports,” the statement read.
