José António Pinto de Sousa, former president of the arbitration board of the Portuguese Football Federation and manager of Boavista, died on Thursday at the age of 85.
“Boavista deeply regrets the passing of José António Gonçalves Pinto de Sousa, member n.º 177, who has served the Club in several directions in the most diverse positions, including Vice President, Member of the General Council and President of the Works during the reconstruction and modernization of Estádio do Bessa, in 1983, which helped transform Boavista”reads out a message of condolence published on the Panthers’ official website, who will pay tribute with the club’s flag at half-mast.
FC Porto “received with consternation” the news of Pinto de Sousa’s death and expressed “the most sincere condolences” to the childhood friend of the President of the Dragons, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, “with whom he was a colleague at Colégio das Caldinhas, in Santo Tirso”.
The funeral of the leader of the refereeing body of the Portuguese Football Federation in the 1980s and at the beginning of the 21st century – when he was involved in the ‘Apito Dourado’ trial, from which he would later be acquitted – will take place on Friday at 15 :00 p.m., in the Church of Foco, in Porto.
