José António Pinto de Sousa, former president of the Arbitration Council of the Portuguese Football Federation and Boavista coach, died Thursday at the age of 85, the I Liga club announced, sharing condolences with rival FC Porto.
“Boavista deeply regrets the death of José António Gonçalves Pinto de Sousa, member no. 177, who served the Club in various directions in the most diverse capacities, including vice president, member of the General Council and president of the Work during the reconstruction and modernization of the Estádio do Bessa, in 1983, which helped transform Boavista”, read a note of regret published on the official website of the ‘panthers’, who will pay tribute with the club’s flag placed in the middle of their foot.
FC Porto “received with dismay” the news of the death of Pinto de Sousa and left “the deepest condolences” to the childhood friend of the president of the ‘dragões’, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, “with whom he was a teammate at the Colégio das Caldinhas, in Santo Tirso”.
The funeral of the leader of the refereeing body of the Portuguese Football Federation in the 1980s and early 21st century – when he was involved in the ‘Golden Whistle’ process, from which he would later be acquitted – takes place on Friday. , at 3 pm, in the Church of Foco, in Porto.
