The Portuguese judoka Raquel Brito won this Saturday the bronze medal at the European Open in Rome by beating the British Caitlin Barber in the fight for one of the third places.
Raquel Brito, 20, one of the promises of Portuguese judo, after having already climbed to the podium in the 2020 Junior Europeans (bronze) and in the Under-23 Europeans last year (bronze), appeared in Rome as sixth standard seed. at -48 kg.
The Open category is below Grand Slam and Grand Prix, awarding fewer points on the world circuit -a victory equals just one hundred points- and came to replace the old world championships of the modality.
Portugal competes in Rome with 15 judokas, the majority, also juniors, in the second line of national judo, and today Raquel Brito stood out with the bronze medal, in an Open in which she won three of four matches.
In this first day also stand out the ninth places of Emerson Silva with -60 kg and Lucas Bernardo with -73 kg, both with two victories and one defeat.
On Sunday, the Portuguese team closes the participation with Manuel Rodrigues, Pedro Raposo (-81 kg), Diogo Brites (-100 kg), Vasco Rompão (+100 kg), Joana Crisóstomo (-70 kg) and Carolina Paiva (-78 kg).
