Teresa Bonvalot defeats the two-time world champion in Supertubos

The Portuguese surfer Teresa Bonvalot won this Saturday the first round of the opening round of the world elite competition in Praia de Supertubos, Peniche, beating the Australian Tyler Wright, two-time world champion, and the Hawaiian Bettylou Sakura Johnson.

The 23-year-old Portuguese Olympian scored 9.93 points in the two best waves (6 and 3.93), out of a possible 20 points, and secured a place in the next phase of the competition.

In second place in the tie was Bettylou Sakura Johnson, with 6.13 points (3.30 and 2.83), who also advances to the ’round of 16′ (eighth finals), while Tyler Wright, world champion in 2016 and 2017, added only 5.37. points (3 and 2.37) and will have to compete in the playoffs.

The third stage of the world circuit started today, after three days of waiting for the best conditions, and competition is expected for the rest of the day, now with the women’s race, after having played the 12 heats of the inaugural men’s race.

The waiting period for MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal began on Wednesday (March 08) and will run until March 16, with the presence of the Portuguese Frederico Morais, Teresa Bonvalot and Yolanda Hopkins.
