The Portuguese surfer Yolanda Hopkins secured a place on Monday in the ‘quarters’ of the elite competition of the World Surfing League (WSL) at Praia de Supertubos, in Peniche, by beating the Hawaiian Carissa Moore, five times world champion.
Yolanda’s strong maneuvers gave her 11.77 points in her two best waves (6.10 and 5.67), out of a possible 20 points, while her opponent, who is the Olympic champion, got 10.23 points (5, 63 and 4.60).
The Portuguese Olympic athlete, who participates in this main event of the circuit as a guest, advanced to the quarterfinals, shortly after her compatriot Teresa Bonvalot (who also represented Portugal in Tokyo 2020), with 9.60 points (5.10 and 4.50), having been eliminated by the Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb, who scored 11.07 points (5.67 and 5.40).
The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the third leg of the WSL’s main circuit, kicked off on Saturday, after three days of waiting for the best conditions, and will run until March 16.
