The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Wednesday classified Portugal’s candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup together with Spain and Morocco as “historic” and promised to “clarify Ukraine’s participation in a timely manner”.
“It is a historic candidacy, as for the first time a World Cup will be held on two continents. The union of the three neighboring countries will contribute to strengthening ties between Europe and Africa, as well as the entire Mediterranean region, and will inspire thousands of young people from both continents in a common project whose fundamental axis is the impact football can have on sporting and social development”reads a note published on the official website of the FPF.
The organization explained that the agreement between the three countries aims to “formulate the strongest possible candidacy in terms of social, sporting, cultural and infrastructure” and added that the decision had already been communicated to the other European federations during UEFA meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda.
“The application has been received very positively”assured the FPF, adding that Morocco’s accession “does not reduce the number of headquarters that will correspond to Spain and Portugal”.
In October last year, the Portuguese and Spanish federation bodies (RFEF) announced that Ukraine would join the Iberian candidacy, a situation the FPF promises to clarify “in due time”.
The situation that the country is going through, such as the invasion of Russia, is at stake, as is the role of the president of the Football Federation of Ukraine, Andriy Pavelko, who is currently suspended.
