The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) described this Wednesday as “historic” Portugal’s candidacy to organize the 2030 World Cup, along with Spain and Morocco, and promised to “clarify in due time and form” Ukraine’s participation.
“It is a historic candidacy, since for the first time a World Cup will be held on two continents. The union of the three neighboring countries will contribute to strengthening ties between Europe and Africa, as well as the entire Mediterranean, and will inspire thousands of young people from both countries in a common project whose fundamental axis is the impact that football can have in sports and social development”, reads a note published on the official website of the FPF.
The organization explained that the agreement between the three countries aims to “formalize a candidacy that is as solid as possible in social, sports, cultural and infrastructure terms” and added that the decision had already been communicated to the rest of the European federations during the meeting of UEFA, which took place on the sidelines of the FIFA congress in Kigali, Rwanda.
“The request was received very positively”, guarantees the FPF, adding that the entry of Morocco “does not reduce the number of venues that will correspond to Spain and Portugal”.
In October last year, the Portuguese and Spanish federal entities (RFEF) announced that Ukraine would join the Iberian candidacy, a situation that the FPF promises to clarify “in due time”.
At stake is the situation the country is going through, such as the invasion of Russia, as well as the role of the president of the Ukrainian Football Federation, Andriy Pavelko, who is currently suspended from his duties.
