The Portuguese women’s soccer team beat Serbia 2-1 this Friday, in a match on the ninth and penultimate day of group H of the qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup, staying in the fight for a place in the final phase of the competition.
In Stara Pazova, the locals opened the scoring thanks to Andjela Frajtovic (six minutes), but the team led by Francisco Neto turned around through Joana Marchão (39) and Kika Nazareth (45+1), thus climbing to second place in the group, with 19 points, two points behind the leader Germany (21), which plays against Turkey on Saturday, and one more against the Serbs (18), third.
In the final round, Portugal will host Turkey, in Vizela, on Tuesday, the same day that Germany visits Bulgaria and Serbia plays in Israel, with the Bulgarians (last, without points), Israelis (Thursday, with nine) and Turks (Wednesday, with 10) you no longer have any chance of qualifying.
Only the top finishers in each of the nine groups qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup, while the runners-up will have to play a ‘play-off’ to access the competition that will be played between July 20 and December 20. August next year, in Australia and New Zealand.
