Marco Meneses breaks the 50m backstroke world record in adapted swimming

Portuguese Paralympic swimmer Marco Meneses broke the world record in the 50m backstroke for S11 athletes on Friday, swimming the distance in 31.47 seconds at the World Series in Great Britain.

In Sheffield, the Paralympian managed to beat all the swimmers in the race and beat the 31.58 seconds that the Czech David Kratochvil had set five days ago, in Italy.

“I am very happy with this world record, it was a bit unexpected. It was a difficult record to beat,” said the Portuguese, quoted by the Portuguese Swimming Federation.

The athlete from Crasto, assigned to the category for the blind or with severe vision problems, surpassed the rest of the swimmers in the World Series by points, ahead of the Brazilian Araújo dos Santos, S2, second, and the Japanese Kubota Kota, S8, third.
