Portugal’s Nuno Borges entered the top 70 of the world tennis rankings for the first time on Monday, on a day when Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz saw his rise to the top of the hierarchy confirmed.
A day after winning the challenger in Phoenix, the player from Maia moved up 12 places to reach 68th place in the ATP rankings, his best position ever.
João Sousa again left the top 150 tennis players in the world, only for the second time since October 2021, when he dropped eight places and now occupies 156th position.
Now at the top of the ATP rankings is Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who overtook Serb Novak Djokovic after winning the Indian Wells Masters 1,000 on Sunday, with Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in third.
The young Spaniard, 22 years old and second in the world rankings at the entrance of this tournament, defeated Medvedev, sixth in the ranking, 6-3 and 6-2, in an hour and 11 minutes.
“It’s very important to me. To regain number one [do ranking] it’s crazy,” said Alcaraz, who has not dropped a set in five meetings at the tournament in California.
In the top 10, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, finalist in Indian Wells, and the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime rose to fifth place.
In the women’s race, Poland’s Iga Swiatek retains the lead, followed by Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and American Jessica Pegula.
