The president of FC Porto rejected this Monday that there has been a “lack of investment” in the main soccer team and guaranteed that a possible budget increase next season will not be related to the club’s elections.
“It is not true that there is a lack of investment. I remember that, this season, we bought Grujic for 10 million euros [ME], Gabriel Veron for 10 ME, David Carmo for 20 ME and others, like Eustáquio. There was no lack of investment. Now, the investment that will be made has nothing to do with the elections”, assured Pinto da Costa.
The coach, who was present today at the 20th gala of the newspaper O Gaiense, in Vila Nova de Gaia, stressed that, in his career as a coach, he had never “hired players or coaches to win elections”.
“Only those who can be in bad faith can think like that. I don’t have the elections in mind, more than a year to go. At this point I’m not even a candidate because it’s not the time.” For that, to be a candidate, that’s not why I’m going to invest a million more or less than usual, ”he added.
Regarding the team’s performance in the I Liga, in which it occupies second place, 10 points behind leader Benfica, the president of FC Porto affirmed that the ‘dragons’ will continue fighting for the title, with nine games to go of the competition
“We only throw in the towel when mathematically it is not possible. Let’s face the next game [com o Portimonense, em 02 de abril] as in game, and the following too. naturally that [o título] it is easier for those in front than for those behind”, analyzed Pinto da Costa.
The president of FC Porto also referred to the frustration of coach Sérgio Conceição after the team’s elimination in the Champions League, against Inter Milan, in the round of 16.
“Anyone from FC Porto who spoke at that moment had to show great frustration because we all had the desire and ambition to go through. We were convinced that it would be possible and the game showed that this feeling was reasonable. Sérgio spoke with frustration and I If he had spoken, he would also have been frustrated,” he confessed.
The leader was present at the event of the newspaper O Gaiaense to participate in a tribute to the former player and former manager of the club Fernando Gomes, who died in November last year, remembering the ‘bibota’ as “an exemplary athlete”.
“He was one of the best players and strikers of all time. He serves as an example for anyone. He was an exemplary athlete, who gave his all on the field. That is what is required of a professional athlete and of FC Porto. two Golden Boots,” he concluded.
