Government prepares to review laws on violence in sport

The Government is already preparing a review of the laws on violence in sports after the recent episodes in the football matches of Famalicão and Estoril. The Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, was questioned in Parliament about the recent cases of violence in soccer stadiums and guaranteed that sport cannot be an exception in the fight against violent phenomena.

“I emphasize again, a reform to the norms of violence in sports is already in the legislative circuit, to be approved. All forms of violence deserve our repudiation, they must be worked on and sports are no exception”, explained Ana Catarina Mendes.

The minister sent more details after the debate on the State Budget, but earlier this month the Secretary of State for Sport, João Paulo Rebelo, already admitted the possibility of creating a security officer for each club.

On Saturday, during Estoril Praia’s draw against the champion FC Porto (1-1), on matchday seven of the I League, a man with a child on his lap, both wearing FC Porto shirts, was insulted and allegedly spat on while they were in an area of the bench intended for the home crowd.

The week before, a boy was forced to take off his Benfica shirt at the Famalicão stadium, since he was, along with his father, on a bench with a majority of local fans.
