Former athlete faces 16 years in prison for leading drug trafficking network

Sergio Contreras, also known as Koke, could be sentenced to 16 years in prison for leading a criminal organization, EFE news agency reported.

The 39-year-old Spaniard is accused of directing operations in a drug trafficking network, such as setting prices and quantities of drugs, delivery locations and means of transportation, among other crimes.

The former Sporting player was arrested in 2019, two years later he left prison conditionally, after paying a bail of 15 thousand euros.

Next Monday, Contreras and 17 other people, including his brother and wife, will stand trial at the Provincial Court of Malaga.

Koke started his career as a striker with Málaga, a club in his home country, and played for clubs such as Marseille, Sporting, Aris Salónica, Houston Dynamo and Rayo Vallecano. He was at Alvalade in the 2005/06 season, having scored six goals for the Lions, netting two goals.
