Portugal’s Ricardo Batista won the bronze medal this Sunday in the second leg of the Triathlon World Cup, in New Plymouth, New Zealand, 36 seconds behind the winner, New Zealander Hayden Wilde.
Batista completed the second of six stages of the World Triathlon Championship Series in 56.32 minutes, the same time recorded by runner-up, also New Zealander Tayler Reid, while the winner recorded 55.57.
The Portuguese triathlete, who had placed 33rd in the first leg in Abu Dhabi on March 3, completed the swim event’s 750 meters in 09.01 minutes, before clocking 31.27 in the 20-kilometer cycle and 15.03 in the five-kilometer race.
“I think it was a well-executed race. I came out of the water second, felt pretty good, I controlled the swimming part. I managed the cycling part well and when we started running, the New Zealand athlete immediately ran away. I managed to go home with a third place, it’s very good at this stage as I’m earning significant points towards the Olympic qualification”, he told the press service of the Portuguese triathlon federation.
In the women’s race, the Portuguese Maria Tomé finished in sixth place, in 01:03.35, and the victory was also achieved by a New Zealander Nicole van der Kaay (01:02.57), ahead of her compatriot Ainsley Thorpe (01:03.06). second, and Norwegian Solveig Lovseth (01:03.14), third.
