Last Tuesday, Sporting completed the turnaround and qualified for the quarter-finals of the European Handball League by winning 34-28 against the Spaniards from Bidasoa Irun, overcoming a three-goal deficit in the first leg.
In a João Rocha pavilion in Lisbon, well filled and with strong support from the Leon fans, Ricardo Costa’s men bounced back from defeat in Irun 30-27, with Martim Costa and Salvador Salvador being key elements to success.
The two Portuguese full-backs scored 10 and six goals respectively, many at key moments in the match, while Spain centre-back Jon Azkue was Bidasoa Irun’s top scorer, also scoring 10 goals in the match.

The game started with a three goal deficit in the first leg, in the stronghold of the rivals, Sporting came in at full speed, with energy and race to, from the start, undo that difference and soon achieved a fundamental result of 4 -1 to reach open.
The Lions stayed focused to prevent Bidasoa Irun from reacting, and put themselves at the head of the game, with a six-goal lead (15-9), which the Spaniards quickly nullified with three consecutive goals.
The break came when the Sporting team won 15-12 against an opponent who alternated many players on the field, making the second half decisive, given the equality, in terms of goals, in the aggregate of the two matches . .

Sporting’s superiority continued in the second half, but failed to hit the scoreboard in the first 15 minutes and gain an advantage of two or more goals in the aggregate score, which, on the contrary, it achieved thanks to two blunders.
Salvador Salvador took advantage of these mistakes to make it 26-21 in favor of Sporting, but the momentum for victory would come on the third attempt, when the sporting team, helped by the irons and with more mistakes from Bidasoa Irun, made it to 31. -25, until five minutes before the end.
Despite the last reaction of the Basque formation, it was not enough to steal the turnaround and passage to the quarter-finals of the second continental handball competition in clubs from Sporting, who won 34-28, now the only Portuguese team in the competition .
