The Scottish soccer team rose to the top of group B1 of the League of Nations on Wednesday, beating the Ukrainian counterpart, 3-0, in a game that was delayed from the second day of the competition.
The greater dedication to the game on the part of the Scots, always more aggressive, explains their success against an apathetic Ukraine, with a somewhat surprising result, taking into account the recent Ukrainian victory at Hampden Park itself, by 3-1, in a match played last June scoring for the qualifying play-off for the 2022 World Cup.
However, the Scots only scored in the last 20 minutes, with Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn opening the scoring in the 70th minute, followed by an encore from Queen’s Park Rangers striker Lyndon Dykes in the 80th and 87th, he which had been released shortly before, at 76, replacing Southampton striker Che Adams.
Queen Elizabeth II, who died last Thursday at the age of 96, was honored before the match between Scotland and Ukraine with a minute of applause in her memory.
With this win, Scotland moved to the top of Group B1 with nine points, in exchange for second-place Ukraine with seven, followed by the Republic of Ireland with four and Armenia with three.
