Honda contests Marc Marquez penalty after crash with Miguel Oliveira

Honda announced on Wednesday that it will challenge the penalty awarded to Spanish rider Marc Márquez following the accident that befell Portugal’s Miguel Oliveira (Aprilia) at Sunday’s Portuguese MotoGP Grand Prix.

In a statement, the official team of the Japanese constructor in the World Speed Championship believes that the clarification issued by the panel of commissioners on Tuesday, which says that the penalty will have to be fulfilled in the next round in which Márquez participates and not specifically in the next race, the GP of Argentina, is “a change of criteria”.

This is because the stewards’ initial statement, issued on Sunday, indicated that Márquez would be admonished for a long double lap at the Argentine GP.

However, the Catalan driver will miss that round due to the injury he sustained in the accident with Miguel Oliveira, so the Japanese team thought the penalty would have no effect.

But on Tuesday, the panel of stewards clarified that the double long round must be fulfilled in the next round in which Márquez competes.

“This change has been issued by the FIM [Federação Internacional de Motociclismo] two days after the initial sanction is final and final, which goes against FIM and MotoGP rules”the team believes.

For that reason, the team will “use all means at its disposal to appeal” to “defend its rights and legitimate interests”, which it considers “violated by the latest resolution”.

In this sense, Honda guarantees that it has already lodged an appeal with the competent authority.

Miguel Oliveira will also miss the Argentine GP due to the contusion and tendon injury in his right leg caused by the collision of Marc Márquez’s bike on the third lap of the Portuguese GP when he was running in second place.
