Diogo Ribeiro broke the national record in the 50m freestyle on Thursday and has already secured the minimum requirements for the 2024 Paris Olympics and the Fukoka World Cup. The Benfica swimmer, aged 18, set the best time in qualifying, with 21.87 seconds, surpassing Miguel Nascimento’s previous maximum in Portugal in September 2022 in Oeiras.
The second fastest time was set by the Ukrainian Andrii Govorov, swimming for Vitória SC, with 21.98 seconds, a figure that is also a minimum for the World Cup.
Miguel Nascimento, also from Benfica, secured the third fastest time in qualifying, three hundredths of the Olympic minimum with 21.99 seconds. The record confirms the minimums for the Fukoka World Cup. The fourth record was set by Benfica’s Miguel Marques, with 22.70, a Junior European Championship minimum.
The Santa Casa Games – Open de Portugal National Youth and Absolute Championships Madeira 2023 will take place at the Funchal Olympic Swimming Pool Complex from March 30 to April 2.
