Diogo Ribeiro broke the national record in the 100-meter freestyle twice in four hours

Diogo Ribeiro broke the national record of the 100 free today… twice in four hours. The Benfica swimmer did 47.97 seconds, bettering Portugal’s previous maximum, which he had already beaten in qualifying (48.01). It is the second best global brand of the year, just behind China’s Wang Haoyu, with 47.89.

Mark exceeds the minimums for Paris 2024 (set at 48.34). The 18-year-old athlete has already secured his presence at the next Olympic Games in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle.

A day after breaking the national record in the 50m freestyle in the qualifiers (21.87) and guaranteeing minimums for the next Olympics and World Cup in Fukuoka (July 14-30), Diogo Ribeiro shined again the second day of the Open Portugal National Youth and Absolute Championships Madeira.

In the 100m freestyle final of the Open de Portugal Junior and Absolute National Championships Madeira, Miguel Nascimento came second with a time of 49.63 seconds. Tiago Costa, from Sporting, closed the podium, over 50 seconds (50.17).

The Benfica swimmer will compete in more disciplines this weekend, namely the 50 and 100 meter butterfly for which he became world famous last year when he won three gold medals in the Junior World Championships, in the 50 meter and 100 meter butterfly and in the 50 meter butterfly . free kicks and a bronze medal at the European Championships in Rome.
