Benfica’s coach, Roger Schmidt, has renewed his contract with the Reds until 2026, the club announced this Friday on social media.
The German arrived at Luz this summer and had a signed contract only until 2024, now extending for two more years.
Quoted by the Eagles’ website, Schmidt admits he didn’t expect to “sign a new contract so soon,” but says he feels “in the right place.”
“I am very happy at Benfica, we have an excellent team and the fans are fantastic. We hope to continue playing good football, we are going for the titles and that is a great motivation for me. It was a clear decision for me to stay longer at Benfica ”, he assured, thanking in particular the incarnate president, Rui Costa, for the trust.
For the football commentator of TSF João Nuno Coelho, this renewal is a sign “of confidence, but also an encouragement for what is lacking at this time”.
In 43 official matches with Benfica, he has 35 wins and only one defeat. The Reds currently lead the Portuguese championship with a ten-point advantage over runner-up FC Porto, and continue in the Champions League: they play the quarterfinals against FC Internazionale, from Milan.

In João Nuno Coelho’s analysis, the new contract also helps the club to “give security to the coach” in the face of the work he is doing and that “it is very noticeable”.
“I think there is an extended termination clause so that Benfica has its position secured”, he points out.
