Japan is considering postponing its candidacy for the Winter Olympics for four years, after the corruption scandals linked to Tokyo 2020, the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), Yasuhiro Yamashita, acknowledged on Tuesday.
The northern Japanese city of Sapporo had ambitions to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, but Yasuhiro Yamashita says it would be “difficult to move forward.” [com a candidatura] without achieving the understanding of the population”.
The manager’s comments come at a time when allegations of corruption and fraudulent bids related to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which will take place in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, are being investigated.
Yamashita also said that the latest Sapporo mayoral election made it clear that “many people have doubts and concerns” and that the discussion should now focus on a possible run in 2034 instead of 2030.
Sweden is studying to enter the race to organize the 2030 Winter Olympics, which has already seen the withdrawals of Salt Lake City, in the United States, which is now targeting the 2034 edition, Vancouver, Canada, and Barcelona-Zaragoza, in Spain .
