Junior world runner-up: “I took the initiative to toughen up the race, I couldn’t have done anything else”

António Morgado was second this morning in the junior cycling world championships but he guarantees that, in the Australian race, he left all his energy on the road.

“I felt very good. The first time I came back I was strong, stronger than the others on the way up. So I tried to make a difference. I tried to attack early, I realized that if the race was not difficult, many people came to the final. I took the initiative to toughen the race, I couldn’t have done anything else”, explains the Portuguese athlete to TSF.

These cycling world championships were marked on António Morgado’s calendar as a goal. “I came here knowing what I was going to face. I’ve been waiting all year for this moment. I only lost a few meters. But I know he was in the best possible shape.”

António Morgado already knows that he will represent the North American Hagens Berman Axeon team next season, but he guarantees that for now he will focus on the U23 competitions. “I want to continue evolving, I want to know how far I can go (…) everything at the right time, of course I want to get to (the elite), but there are still under-23 races that I want to run”.
