This Saturday, Benfica tries to return to the path of victory at Desportivo de Chaves, with FC Porto, which hosts Santa Clara, ‘waiting’ for another ‘stumble’ from the leader, on matchday 28 of the 1st Football League.
The ‘incarnated’ travel to Trás-os-Montes at a time when they are going through the most difficult moment of this season, after two consecutive defeats, both at La Luz: the first against FC Porto (2-1), by the championship, and the second against Inter Milan (2-0), in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
With a seven-point lead at the top of the I Liga, Benfica, who will be deprived of Florentino, who is suspended, needs to get past 11th place in the competition to put an end to the ‘mini-crisis’ and cool down the aspirations of the ‘dragons’, current champion teams, who regained new hopes after the victory on the last day, in Lisbon.
Chaves-Benfica is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with FC Porto, in second place, measuring forces with the red lantern Santa Clara shortly after, at 8:30 p.m., in a match in which Sérgio Conceição’s team is ‘super favourite’, even without Iranian striker Taremi, who will surely go down due to suspension.
Even so, in the first round, the ‘dragons’ stumbled in the Azores, returning home with just a draw (1-1) in the ‘baggage’.
Also today, Estoril Praia hosts Portimonense and Marítimo plays in Madeira with Paços de Ferreira, in what will be, according to the official accounts of the League, the 20,000th game in the history of the Portuguese first division.
The accounting began on January 20, 1935, in the so-called I Liga Experimental Championship, with Benfica and Vitória de Sétubal meeting at Campo das Amoreiras, in Lisbon.
The day started on Friday with Famalicão beating Vitória de Guimarães 2-1 at home.
