Benfica wrote a letter to Inter Milan apologizing for the incidents that occurred in Italy during the Champions League football match, the Portuguese club announced on its official website on Thursday.
“The football we want does not involve this kind of situation, which is completely repugnant and not in line with the values and principles of Sport Lisboa e Benfica”refers to the Portuguese club’s note referring to the throwing of flares into the stands against the area where Inter fans were, during the second leg of the semi-final, which ended in a 3–3 draw.
The Benfica fans, located on the third ring of the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, in Milan, caused a panic in the lower stands with this action, injuring several people, including an eight-year-old child.
The throwing of the flares happened in the second half, with about six thrown over the southern bend of Milan’s stadium, sparking a stampede of people seeking refuge in the stands.
19 ‘red’ supporters had been arrested before the game, after clashes with police in which five officers were injured.
