The editor-in-chief of the German magazine Die Aktuelle, who published a fake interview with Michael Schumacher made with artificial intelligence, has been fired, media group Funke announced on Saturday (22).
“This tasteless and misleading article should never have appeared. It is not at all up to the standards of journalism that we – and our readers – expect from a group like Funke,” complained Bianca Pohlmann, director of magazines for the Funke group.
“The editor-in-chief of Die Aktuelle, Anne Hoffmann, in office since 2009, has been absent since this Saturday,” the group adds, offering “apologies” to the family of the legendary German Formula 1 driver.
The magazine boasted of obtaining an interview with Michael Schumacher, the first since the skiing accident and serious head injury in late 2013 in the French Alps.
On Wednesday, the magazine, which specializes in celebrity information, published the “interview” and revealed that it was generated by artificial intelligence.
The piece included quotes attributed to Schumacher, about his family life since the accident and his state of health.
After publication, the family of the former champion announced that they would file a complaint.
The family of 54-year-old Michael Schumacher scrupulously protects the privacy of the former driver, who has not been seen in public since the 2013 ski accident. Since then, almost no information has been released about his health.
