Nicolas Schindelholz, a former Swiss footballer, has died of cancer at the age of 34, Basel, the club where he was founded, reported this Monday.
“Basel mourns the loss of Nicolas Schindelholz. Our former captain under 21 died of cancer at the age of 34. Basel is shocked by this news and offers its deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Rest in peace Nico,” the club wrote on the website social network Twitter.

Trained in Basel, where he captained the under-21 team, Schindelholz represented the Swiss clubs Thun, Luzern and Aarau.
Two years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer when he wore the shirt of Aarau, the club where he ended his career in 2021.
“Our former central defender has passed away from cancer at the age of 34. FC Aarau extends its deepest condolences to his family and wishes them all the best during this difficult time,” the message read on social media.

The former Swiss footballer played 177 official matches and scored eight goals during his professional career, which started in Basel in the 2006/2007 season.
