Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will receive the city’s medal of honor from the Chamber of Lisbon, in recognition of the way he has always defended, promoted and projected the name of the Portuguese capital in the world, the municipality revealed today.
The award of the medal to Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of the Portugal national team and currently with Al Nassr, of Saudi Arabia, was approved on Wednesday at a meeting of the city council, with 14 votes in favour, one abstention and two votes against.
The vote on the proposal, presented by the mayor, Carlos Moedas (PSD), took place by secret ballot.
Carlos Moedas, quoted in a note from the Lisbon Chamber, emphasizes the importance of recognizing “those who, by virtue of their worth, their energy, their ability”, have contributed to the city, defending that “the story of Cristiano Ronaldo , considered several times as the best player in the world, is closely linked to Lisbon’s history”.
“This is a tribute to a boy who became a man in Lisbon and who, in addition to his identity of the place where he was born, became a great Lisbonr, in the sense of the passion he has for the city,” says the mayor , insisting that the Portuguese attacker has “always defended, promoted and projected the name of Lisbon all over the world”, and “he is also a great Lisbonr and that has never been acknowledged”.
Carlos Moedas also recalls “the extraordinary hope that Cristiano Ronaldo gives so many young people by helping them dream”, so that they know that “through their merit they can get where they want”.
Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Madeira, where he started playing football, before moving to Lisbon to play for Sporting.
The 38-year-old striker also played for clubs such as Manchester United (England), Real Madrid (Spain) and Juventus (Italy), where he won the 2016 UEFA European Championship and the 2018 Nations League, among others. / 19, for the Portuguese national team, and five Champions Leagues.
