Lionel Messi apologized on Friday for making an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia that led to the Argentina captain being suspended by his club Paris Saint-Germain.
“Obviously I want to apologize to my teammates and the club.”said Messi in a video posted on Instagram to his 458 million followers.
The world champion has been suspended by the French club after he failed to show up for training on Monday, the day after the 3-1 home defeat against Lorient in the French league.
Instead, Messi traveled to Saudi Arabia without PSG’s permission to fulfill publicity obligations as part of a contract with the country’s tourism board.
“Honestly, I thought we would have a day off after the game, just like in previous weeks,” he said.
“I had organized this trip to Saudi Arabia after canceling it before. This time I couldn’t cancel it. I apologize for what I did and I wait to see what the club decides to do,” he said.
