Open water: Mafalda Rosa in sixth place and Tiago Campos in 16th place in the World Cup

The Portuguese Mafalda Rosa finished this Monday in sixth place in the Open Water Swimming World Cup in Soma Bay, Egypt, while Tiago Campos was 16th in the men’s competition.

The 19-year-old CN Rio Maior swimmer completed the 10 kilometers of the Egyptian race in 02:04.20.40 hours, 15.8 seconds behind the winner, the German Leonie Beck.

“I always had a good feeling in a race with difficult conditions with wind and ‘choppy’ water. Overall it was a very positive result. We are talking about a World Cup, in which I competed with the best swimmers of today. I am more than proud of my result and now it is time to continue because more competitions are coming”, said the Portuguese, junior European champion in 2021 and bronze in 2022.

The Dutch Sharon van Rouwendaal, silver in Tokyo 2020, was second, spending 2.7 seconds more than Beck, current European champion, ahead of the Brazilian Ana Marcela Cunha, Olympic champion, who took 6.4 seconds more to cross the goal.

In the men’s competition, won by the German Florian Wellbrock, in 01:48.33.7 hours, the Portuguese Tiago Campos, 24, was 16th, with a time of 01:57.14.5 hours.

“I think my participation in the World Cup was very positive. I came to compete with the best in the world. 16th place is within my goals. A very tough race in terms of conditions: lots of waves, lots of wind. we are going to have more competitions and I also hope to be well”, said the CN Rio Maior swimmer, also mentioned by the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN).

Wellbrock, champion in Tokyo 2020, beat Frenchman Marc-Antoine Olivier, in second place, by a tenth of a second, and his compatriot Logan Fontaine, who was third, by 1.8 seconds.
