UEFA and the European Space Agency (ESA) today informed the association of an unprecedented collaboration to improve crowd management, the presence of pitches in local life and the environmental impact of football.
The agreement until the end of 2025 will enable the introduction of “spatial innovation in professional football leagues”, the two organizations said in a statement following a meeting held in Lausanne on Monday.
Using satellite data will help “monitor crowds from space” and identify “choke points around” sports venues.
UEFA will be able to access existing ‘history’ for specific locations, and communications satellites will be able to support ground-based communications, which are often overwhelmed when large crowds gather.
According to the statement, this agreement could also help UEFA “identify the benefits a football stadium brings to local communities”, combining satellite information with socio-economic, meteorological and health data.
