The International Cycling Union will sanction the use of helicopters after the stages

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced this Saturday that it will take “the necessary measures and sanctions” so that the use of helicopters to take cyclists out of the mountains after the stages is not repeated, after occurring in the Tour of Italy.

In a statement released today, the UCI confirmed “the use of helicopter transport by some cyclists” to leave the finish line of the seventh stage of the Giro, on the snowy mountain of Gran Sasso d’Italia.

“This constitutes an advantage that goes against the principles of fair play and regulations aimed at guaranteeing equal treatment of transfer from teams to hotels. This use also goes against the principle of reducing the carbon footprint ”, can be read in the note.

This situation will lead the body of the world cycling summit to “take the necessary measures and sanctions so that this practice does not occur in the future”, but it does not describe what sanctions will be imposed.

“The UCI strongly condemns this behaviour, (…) which goes against the fundamental values of the sport”, they conclude.
