This Sunday, Portugal closed the I Canoeing World Cup with a total of six medals, following bronze medals in the K2 500 meters by João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista and mixed by Fernando Pimenta and Teresa Portela, in Hungary.
In Szeged, the great world reference of the modality, João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista reached another podium at this Olympic distance and finished their performance in 01:30:94 minutes, just 48 hundredths of a second from the Hungarians Bence Nadas/Sandor Totka, who the Australians Jean van der Westhuyzen and Thomas Green with 38 hundredths.
Soon after, Teresa Portela and Fernando Pimenta also took their boat to third place, in 1:37:79 minutes, behind two Australian pairs, with Alyssa Bull and Jackson Collins securing the gold, 1:68 seconds short of the Portuguese, leaving compatriots Riley Fitzsimmons and Yale Steinepreis at 1:45 p.m.
After 15 medals in international competitions in 2022, Fernando Pimenta started the season with three podiums, as he had already won gold in the K1 500 meters and silver in the K1 1000 meters: in the K1 5,000 competition, in which he usually wins medals, broke and did not complete the test.
Silver still went to Hélder Silva in C1 200 meters, while in paracanaogem Norberto Mourão, European, world and Olympic bronze in VL2 200 meters, took gold in Szeged.
This Sunday, in K2 500, Emanuel Silva and Kevin Santos placed sixth in final B, 15th final, while Francisca Laia and Joana Vasconcelos placed fifth in final C, corresponding to 23rd final place.
In canoes, Beatriz Fernandes placed 14th in C1 500 meters.
The qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place in Duisburg, Germany, between August 23 and 27.
