The women’s soccer coach, Francisco Neto, renewed his contract with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), in a new relationship established until 2027, the federative body reported on Tuesday.
Francisco Neto has been in charge of the main Portuguese women’s soccer team since 2014, having previously held the role of technical coordinator and goalkeeping coach in the structure, since 2009.
“Above all, it is a privilege to be able to continue working in this institution that has done a lot for the development of women’s football and that is reflected in the results,” the 41-year-old coach told FPF advice.
This renewal will allow Francisco Neto to be this year not only in the final phase of the 2023 World Cup, an unprecedented competition for the Portuguese women’s team, but also in the qualification for the 2025 Euro Cup, in the two qualifications for the League of Nations (2024 and 2026) and in qualifying for the 2027 World Cup.
“I am also proud to be able to continue to be part of this path that we have been following in recent years, which involves many people and many institutions (FPF, clubs and district and regional football associations). (…) Being able to continue with this work is something that makes us very proud”, added the coach.
Francisco Neto promised to keep the team competitive and to believe until the last minute, stressing that Portugal wants to rely only on itself, wanting to be “a surprise” at this year’s World Cup.
The renewal of Francisco Neto was announced at the same time as that of Jorge Braz, with whom he also renewed the Federation, but until 2026.
“We want to keep looking to the future and allow Francisco Neto to participate and lead the National Team to a new World Cup, which will be in 2027, and for Jorge Braz to extend their relationship until 2026, the year in which another Futsal European Championship is born. Championship”, considered the president of the FPF, Fernando Gomes, whose term ends in 2024.
