The PSP announced this Friday that it had prepared a device to deal with possible spontaneous celebrations that may occur if Benfica is proclaimed national soccer champion this weekend, clarifying, however, that “there will be no official celebrations.”
“A plan is being prepared that covers the entire weekend, knowing that there is the possibility of spontaneous demonstrations by fans,” said Mayor Francisco Alves, of the Public Security Police (PSP), at a press conference at the Sporting-Benfica, match of the 33rd round of the I League, scheduled for Sunday, at the Estádio José Alvalade.
During the weekend, the ‘incarnated’ can ensure, on the penultimate day of the championship, the conquest of the 38th soccer champion title in its history, which, if given, will not be officially held,” according to Francisco Alves.
Regarding the match at the Estádio José Alvalade, on Sunday, at 8:30 p.m., Francisco Alves recalled that it is “a “high-risk” match, in which around 45,000 spectators are expected.
“We know that it is a sporting event considered a historic derby, of a competition that is in a decisive phase,” said the mayor of the PSP, appealing for the collaboration of the fans.
According to Francisco Alves, the doors of the José Alvalade Stadium open at 6:30 p.m., and the Benfica fans are expected to follow on foot, who will gather at the Estádio da Luz to go to the ‘Leonese’ bastion.
“We ask Benfica fans who want to gather at the Estádio da Luz to do so before 4:30 p.m., so that the usual pedestrian monitoring can begin at 5:00 p.m.,” said the mayor.
For ‘red’ fans who choose to go directly to the Sporting stadium, PSP recommends parking next to the Ricardo Jorge Institute, which “will have surveillance from 4:30 p.m.”.
Anticipating a large influx of traffic in the area of the Sports Venue between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., the PSP asks all those who are not going to attend the event to avoid, if possible, going around the place from from 18:00 hours: 00.
Regarding the sale of tickets, Francisco Alves recalled that “the PSP does not deal with ticket sales, nor does it know the variables that lead to the allocation of tickets”, but he assured that he supports everything possible, and called for the complaint from any suspicion of speculation.
“The needles are in tune, we cannot intervene in ticket sales, what we can do is simply give suggestions to the promoter and that has already been done,” he said, adding: “In all the games there will be supporters of both teams.” who will be in certain places of the stadium of the two teams. In this match the concern may be greater, because we are talking about a derby”.
However, appealing to everyone’s good behavior, the PSP mayor recalled that “if the fans go to their destinations and behave normally, the police do not have to intervene.”
Benfica will be crowned national champions for the 38th time if they beat fourth-placed Sporting with 70 points in the derby scheduled for Sunday.
However, Benfica, who are four points ahead of second-placed FC Porto, can clinch the title on Saturday if the ‘blue and whites’ lose at Famalicão.
