The first half in Alvalade ended with Sporting’s victory over Benfica 2-0.
The lions got into the game better, pushing Benfica against the ropes, and at 39′ they managed to also put the advantage they were showing on the pitch on the scoreboard. Nuno Santos put the ball low into the area, from a pass from Trincao. António Silva missed the cut and Trincão went to the ground, shooting to save Vlachodimos, but the ball fell back to the Sporting player who went around the Benfica goalkeeper and scored.
The second goal for the locals came just before the break, already in added time. Central Diomande won with a header in the duel with Grimaldo, after a corner taken by Nuno Santos, and headed down, taking the ball to enter near the left post. Vlachodimos still touched, but was unable to block the shot.
Benfica is playing this Sunday at the home of rival Sporting, at the end of the 33rd and penultimate matchday of the I Liga, looking to win to be champion, with the added attraction of being able to celebrate in Alvalade.
Roger Schmidt’s team comes from four consecutive victories in the League, just like the hosts, and if they win they will add the 38th I Liga title in their history, the first since 2019 -otherwise, they will be forced to beat Santa Clara on the last day, at the Estádio da Luz.
