The Spanish League wants more powers to punish cases of violence and racism

The Spanish Football Federation will ask for an amendment to the law against violence and racism in sport after it was “frustrated” with the legal limits of its action on Tuesday and claimed more powers to punish offenders.

“Despite the ongoing fight against violence and racism, to the limits of its powers (limited under Spanish law to the investigation and denunciation of facts), LaLiga feels enormous frustration at the lack of sanctions that its charges have earned by sports disciplinary authorities, justice and public administration”, the organization said in a statement.

The Spanish League, chaired by Javier Tebas, said it would formally request changes to the legislation against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport in the coming days, following the racist insults against Brazilian Vinícius Júnior, striker of de Real Madrid, in the match to be held in Valencia on Sunday.

“The purpose of the proposal will be to ask that LaLiga can take disciplinary action in cases like this at professional championships, so that the disciplinary bodies of LaLiga can punish them with the total or partial closure of, among other things, the stadiums of the offenders.”, explained the organism.

The organizer of the Spanish League warned that “for years it has been leading the fight against violence, racism and intolerance both inside and outside football stadiums”, noting that it submits a report every week to the Competition Committee of the Royal Spanish Federation de Futebol and the anti-violence commission.

On Sunday, the 22-year-old Brazilian striker was again the target of racist insults from some supporters, prompting reactions from several quarters, namely from Brazil’s president, Lula da Silva, and FIFA’s leader, Gianni. Infantino.

In recent months, Vinícius has been the target of several racist slurs and at the end of January, the player was the protagonist in an episode that prompted the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) to send a letter to the entities governing football (FIFA, UEFA and CONMEBOL) to to call for concrete measures to punish racist behavior and raise awareness of the problem.

At the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia, Vinícius, who was sent off after attacking an opponent, criticized right at the end of the game (90+7 minutes), which the ‘merengues’ lost 1-0, the Spanish league and the supporters with a message on social media.

“It was not the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in LaLiga. The competition thinks it’s normal, the federation thinks it’s normal and the opponents encourage it. I’m sorry. Belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi, this Tuesday belongs to the racists,” the footballer wrote on the social network Twitter.

Real Madrid has also reported that it has filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office “for crimes of hatred and discrimination” against the ‘Canarinho’ international.
