The president of Benfica, the former footballer Rui Costa, thanked the players of the red squad this Saturday for winning the 38th title of national champion, after the victory against Santa Clara (3-0) in the 34th and last matchday of the First League .
“[Quero] Thank you all for this year, a very difficult year for everyone and for the club. The enormous responsibility of not winning the trophy for many years. [Por] We managed to give our associative mass the greatest joy, what they most want from us”, declared the red leader, in the Estádio da Luz locker room.
For Costa, it is to be thankful for the “enormous joy they gave all the Benfica fans”, but above all “their work and sacrifice, and that of the entire squad”.
“Thank you for believing from the first day, and thank you on behalf of all the people of Benfica. We are national champions”, he declared.
It is the first title for the former Portuguese international attacking midfielder as president of the ‘Águias’, after having already won it as a footballer, also playing for Benfica, in the 1993/94 season.
Benfica was crowned Portuguese football champion for the 38th time this Saturday, after beating Santa Clara, 3-0, at home, in a match of the 34th and last round of the Portuguese First League.
Needing a victory to mathematically secure the title, Benfica scored through Gonçalo Ramos (07 minutes), Rafa (28) and Grimaldo (60), from the penalty spot.
After a ‘drought’ of three seasons, the ‘incarnated’ once again celebrated a national title, finishing the I Liga with 87 points, two more than FC Porto.
