Armando Evangelista leaves the technical command of Arouca after fifth place in the League

The Portuguese coach Armando Evangelista will leave Arouca, after having led the club to fifth place in the 2022/23 edition of the Portuguese Soccer League, the Arouquenses announced this Monday.

Armando Evangelista, 49, has guided the club in the last three seasons, achieving a return to the top division, in 2020/21, and maintenance last season, with 15th place, before equaling the best ranking of history in the first division, repeating fifth place in 2015/16.

“Arouca announces the departure of coach Armando Evangelista from the club’s technical command. On behalf of President Carlos Pinho, of the entire Arouquense structure and family, we want to thank Armando Evangelista and the rest of the technical staff for all the work and dedication in favor of the club, also wishing future sporting and personal successes”, reads the statement from the Arouquenses.

The coach began his career as a coach in the youth teams of Vitória de Guimarães, in the 2009/10 season, the club where he completed his training, going through Vizela before being promoted to the Vimaranenses B team, which managed to rise to the II League, in 2014.

Evangelista even started the 2015/16 season in the Guimarães main team, but ended up leaving, after seven games, and then added experiences in Varzim, Penafiel and Vilafranquense, before arriving in Arouca.

In 2020, the coach joined the Arouquense shield, which had been promoted from the Portuguese Championship the previous year, and was immediately promoted to the I Liga, with the club ending the season in third position in the II Liga and winning the play-off Access to the first level in front of Av. Río.

If the return of the ‘wolves’ to the main division was problematic, with maintenance assured in the last round of the championship, Evangelista’s third year at the helm of the team stood out, with the coach managing to match the best classification and club score, fifth position, with 54 points, and a historic classification for the Europa Conference League.

With the departure of the coach who played the most games for Arouca in the I Liga (68), the club is now looking for a replacement to prepare for next season, which will start in the third round of the third European club competition.
