Ana Rute among the 23 selected from Portugal for the Women’s World Cup

Midfielder Ana Rute, from Sporting de Braga, is the main novelty in the 23 chosen by coach Francisco Neto to represent Portugal in the Women’s World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand, from July 20 to August 20.

In relation to the 23 players who were on the record for the game against Cameroon (2-1), which placed the ‘quinas’ team at the 2023 World Cup on February 22, Ana Rute replaces her teammate Vanessa Marques .

Ana Rute was one of 25 chosen for the Intercontinental play-off, but was left out of the 23, as was striker Kelsey Araújo (Le Havre).

Of those chosen for the 2023 World Cup, only Ana Seiça did not play in qualifying, with 19 of the 23 chosen in Euro 2022 – Benfica’s centre-back Ana Rute, Andreia Jacinto, replaced afterwards through injury, and Ana Capeta are new .

The ‘quinas’ team qualified on February 22 to beat Cameroon 2-1 in Hamilton, New Zealand, in the Group A final of the Intercontinental play-off, in a win sealed by a Carole Costa penalty, on 90+4 minutes.

In the 2023 World Cup, Portugal will compete in the group stage against the number two of the title Netherlands (July 23), in Dunedin, Vietnam (27), in Hamilton, and the trophy holders United States (August 1), in Auckland .

The World Cup will take place between July 20 and August 20 in Australia and New Zealand, and ahead of the match on July 10, the ‘quinas’ squad will meet Ukraine on July 7 at Estádio do Bessa, in Port.
