Portuguese footballer João Moutinho ended his career at Wolverhampton at the end of this season with the end of his contract with the 13th Premier League player, the club confirmed today.
“There must be no other player who can better sum up the return of Premier League football to Molineux than the yard and seventy than football heaven itself, João Moutinho”reads the club’s farewell message to the Portuguese midfielder.
João Moutinho, 36, arrived at Wolves in 2018-19, who hails from Monaco, having played for FC Porto and Sporting.
The 2016 European champion for Portugal and 2019 League of Nations winner, the midfielder has scored seven goals in 146 times he has worn the ‘quinas’ jersey.
Wolverhampton’s sporting director spared no praise for the Portuguese midfielder.
“João will leave us as one of the best players in our shirt, in my opinion. He was an integral part of the team all the time he was here. He was instrumental in our success over the last four, five years .”said Matt Hobbs, quoted by the club.
After five seasons at the club, the Portimão player was responsible for “raising the level and expectations of the players themselves”, according to Hobbs.
“When he arrived we had a large contingent of Portuguese and he was a hero to many, for what he had achieved, both at the club and in international football. He was just there and people wanted to follow what he was doing.” We thank João for everything he has done at Wolves and wish him every success for the future.”concluded the leader of the “wolves.”
Like Moutinho, they too are ending their contracts with the English club, now coached by Julen Lopetegui, Spain internationals Diego Costa and Adama Traoré, with the latter Hobbs admitting his continuity is still being negotiated.
