It’s not closed, but almost. Manuel Ugarte is preparing to become a Chelsea player, in a historic transfer for the sums involved: 60 million euros. With two offers on the table, the number 15 of the lions could choose, but Sporting also has a say and prefers the offer of the Blues, who overtook PSG in the race for the Uruguayan midfielder.
Both teams announced their intention to breach the €60 million player release clause, but while the Parisian club warned it would stop doing that, the London emblem was prepared to pay the costs of the operation and the solidarity mechanism.
This is an important issue for the Lions as they only have 70% of Ugarte’s pass and have to give up 30% to Famalicão. That is 42 million for Sporting and 18 million for Famalicenses, who invested three million in the purchase of the midfielder from Fénix in Uruguay, the club where he started his career.
Taking into account that the value of the termination clause will be defeated, never before has Sporting sold a player for such a high price. The record for the Alvalade side is Bruno Fernandes, who left for Manchester United for 55 million euros, plus 25 million in variable goals. To date, Bruno Fernandes has earned 65 million, making it the highest-grossing venture ever for the lion emblem.
Ugarte leaves Sporting after two seasons and 85 matches with a lion on his chest.
