The Super Cup match between champions Benfica and FC Porto, winners of the Portuguese Cup, will be played on weekdays on August 8 or 9 to avoid overlapping with other events.
The information was released this Wednesday by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), adding that the match will take place at Estádio Municipal de Aveiro and start at 8:45 PM, but it will not be on a weekend.
“To avoid overlaps, the day of the match will not be known until July 24 after the draw of the Champions League which determines the date on which Sporting de Braga will participate in the third qualifying round of the UEFA competition,” said the FPF.
Another aspect was the agreement between Benfica and FC Porto not to play on the weekend of August 5 and 6, as these dates coincide with World Youth Day, which takes place in Lisbon between August 1 and 6.
The venue for the Super Cup is once again the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro, which has hosted the competition for the past three editions and has played twelve times in total since 2009 – in 2015 and 2019 the stage was the Estádio do Algarve.
“The Aveiro City Council has the greatest honor and the greatest pleasure to host this 2023 edition of the Super Cup, which repeats a classic that has not happened in this competition for three years, between Benfica and FC Porto,” said the mayor of Aveiro, Ribau Esteves, quoted by the FPF.
Benfica is in the Super Cup, which it won eight times, as national champions in 2022/23, while FC Porto won the Portuguese Cup by beating Sporting de Braga (2-0) in the final played on Sunday.
The ‘dragons’ are record holders of Supercup trophies, having won them 23 times, the last being in 2022, beating Tondela, who was a finalist in the 2021/22 Taça de Portugal.
