Carlos Carvalhal is no longer coach of Celta de Vigo, the club from the Spanish football league announced on Saturday.
“RC Celta and Carlos Carvalhal terminate their contractual relationship as first-team coaches. The club would like to express their sincere thanks to Carvalhal and his assistants for the professionalism and honesty they have shown since their arrival in Vigo last November,” reads a statement published on the Spanish official website.

The Portuguese coach signed a contract valid until 2024 with the Galician club on November 2, at a time when the team was 16th in the Spanish league, just one point above the relegation zone.
In his first experience in Spanish football, Carvalhal, aged 57, led Celta de Vigo to 13th place in LaLiga, conquered this year by FC Barcelona.
“We wish the Portuguese coach every success in his professional and personal future, besides thanking him for his daily work and dedication during these eight months,” concluded Celta.
This was the former centre-back’s fifth experience as a coach outside Portugal, following spells in England (Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City), Turkey (Besiktas and Istanbul BB), Greece (Asteras Tripoli) and the Emirates (Al Wahda).
In a publication on his account on the social network Twitter, the technician indicated that it was “a real privilege” to represent the Galicians.

“I am proud to say goodbye to the club staying where it deserves: in its first division centenary. From now on I will be more of a Celtic player from the stands. I will be back…”, he added in a publication in which he also thanked Celta de Vigo’s players, supporters and structure.
In Portugal, Carvalhal won the Portuguese Cup with Sporting de Braga, in 2020/21, in his second spell with the Minho club, having previously commanded Rio Ave, Sporting, Marítimo, Vitória de Setúbal, Beira-Mar, Belenenses, Leixões, Desportivos das Aves, Vizela, Freamunde and Sporting de Espinho.
